AI Pruning!
AI-Supported Fruit Tree Pruning
Plant pruning is a demanding, critical, and expensive task in fruit growing that is often performed by experts or the fruit growers themselves, as mistakes affect the perennial crop in the long term. However, since skilled workers and time are lacking, 'AI Pruning' aims to help overcome these bottlenecks.
With 'AI Pruning', untrained workers can perform pruning professionally and quickly. A smartphone is used - which can be extended with smart glasses - that analyzes the plants and displays precise instructions for pruning directly. This can close a significant innovation gap between technology and practice.

At the Future Symposium held at Geisenheim University, the project team presented the latest developments in the KI-Rebschnitt, 'AI Pruning', and Laser:Viticulture projects to an audience of aspiring winemakers and experts from the wine industry.
During a speaker session, the approximately 45 participants were divided into two groups. Christopher Hermes (right in the photo), a viticulture engineer at DLR Mosel, presented the 'AI Pruning' project and demonstrated its potential applications. Simon Häring (left in the photo) and Frederik Kurz (center) presented the projects 'AI Pruning' and Laser:Viticulture and provided insights into their objectives as well as their practical benefits for viticulture. After switching groups, all participants were able to learn about the various topics and ask questions.
In addition, the project was represented by an information booth in the foyer to facilitate discussions and professional exchange.
The Future Symposium at Geisenheim University provided a great opportunity to present the project work and foster dialogue with future users from the wine industry!
